Come on you boys in green

Local Gaelgeoirí Ireland supporters club Na Glinntí Glasa have got their World Cup campaign firmly underway. The lads who are based in West Belfast were celebrating last week after the Republic recorded a 3-0 victory over Cyprus last weekend and escaped from Basel with a point on Wednesday night.

The club was established in 1975 and members have travelled all over the world supporting the Irish team. Although they are based in West Belfast members from the club come from as far and wide as counties Down and Armagh.

Founder member Fra Torbitt says that even though Na Glinntí Glasa have been going for a long time and have supported the boys through thick and thin, the supporters club – like many across the country – are finding it difficult to come by enough tickets for matches.

“Since Jack Charlton became involved with the team, their fortunes have turned around and tickets for competitive games are in huge demand which means that demand is now outstripping supply,”  said Fra.

“We know that from our experience that competitive match tickets are very hard to come by and we have had to restrict our membership.” We have 25 members and have a further 20 waiting to join the club,” he added.
